Another loss, another Squanto Day
My friend Joe was a lot of fun. We hung out and partied with a bunch of friends from different circles over the past 7 years or so.
I’ve watched him play with several bands, and at the all ages shows, he’d sneak me beer.
His first- and most likely last- time camping was with me and Matt and some other friends over the summer. He loved it.
His death was quite sudden, completely unexpected. An injury sustained during a violent seizure took him away.

R.I.P. Joe. We’ll miss the hell out of you.

Squanto Day in Pictures… the food was great (and I cooked it ALL- I really like to be left alone in the kitchen) but we have GOT to find a way to make it more exciting than a regular old Thanksgiving.
I’ve just pulled the pies out:

So I used store- bought pie crust. Sue me.
The pecan pie is the famous Gholdston Pecan Pie- except that I violated the golden rule of “DO NOT DEVIATE FROM THE RECIPE” and used brown rice syrup instead of corn syrup. It actually turned out well, surprising me.

Oh, and I made brownies. From a box. Because two pies didn’t feel like enough dessert for any deserving holiday.
The menu:
Appetizers:
baby dill pickles
olives
cheese cubes
Mangosteen fruit (thought it might be interesting… meh)
deviled eggs
mixed nuts
Dinner:
German hot potato salad
Gholdston sweet potato casserole (it is seriously addicting)
Brussels sprouts
cranberry sauce
giblet gravy (with extra giblets)
the inevitable turkey
brown and serve rolls (my grandma used to get them, and I still love them)
stuffing, of course
Dessert:
Gholdston (ish?) Pecan Pie
pumpkin pie
brownies
my special cafe lattes for adults (minus Arielle, who doesn’t like coffee and doesn’t need any more caffeine, anyway)
hot chocolate for kids
Tomorrow the chaos begins. With hellish scenes like those from epic disaster movies, only with shopping carts, humans will destroy themselves and each other in a materialistic red- and- green- sparkled display of panic, despair, and holiday cheer set to a soundtrack of choruses of angels and crappy performances of Jingle Bell Rock.
I’m hoping I can avoid it all and shop on Etsy, but my budget will probably have me cart- bashing at wal- mart with the rest of the hordes.
Happy holidays, everyone.

Your budget and my budget, both.
